The Church Calendar at Saint Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church serves as a spiritual roadmap, guiding our liturgical, sacramental, and communal life throughout the year. It marks the significant feasts, fasts, and commemorations that shape our worship and deepen our faith.
Liturgical Year
The Orthodox liturgical year begins on September 1st and is filled with numerous feasts and fasts that commemorate the life of Christ, the Theotokos (Mother of God), and the saints. These celebrations provide us with opportunities for spiritual renewal and deeper participation in the mysteries of our faith.
Major Feasts
Nativity of the Theotokos (September 8th):
Celebrating the birth of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.
Elevation of the Holy Cross (September 14th):
Commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena.
Nativity of Christ (Christmas, December 25th):
Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Theophany (January 6th):
Celebrating the baptism of Christ and the manifestation of the Holy Trinity.
Pascha (Easter):
The most significant feast, celebrating the resurrection of Christ. The date varies each year.
Ascension (40 days after Pascha):
Celebrating Christ's ascension into heaven.
Pentecost (50 days after Pascha):
Celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.
Transfiguration (August 6th):
Celebrating the transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor.
Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15th):
Commemorating the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary.
